Antique Japanese Black & Gilt Lacquer Box – Hand-Painted Court Figures, Hinged Lid

Antique Japanese Black and Gilt Lacquer Box

A beautiful black Japanese lacquer box hand-decorated in gold and colored lacquer. The lid shows an elegant palace interior with robed court figures gathered around a low table beside folding screens. The front shows noble figures gliding in a boat past reeds and water, centered on a keyhole escutcheon, with gilt landscape scenes continuing around the sides.

A treasured piece for collectors of Japanese export lacquerware and chinoiserie, and a lovely keepsake, jewelry or trinket box for a desk, dresser or coffee table.
