Some friendships start in the comments section and never look back. Leslle and Deidra Sarego, better known on Instagram as the Magpie Sisters, have been following along with Lance and me since before we bought the Governor's Mansion in Commerce. That's more than ten years of likes, DMs, and cheering each other on.
So when they heard we'd be in their neck of the woods for one of our classes, they asked a simple question: could we have a playdate?
Then Lara Spencer, yes, that Lara Spencer from Flea Market Flip and host of That Thrifting Show with Lara Spencer, heard from the Magpie Sisters we were heading that way, she had to come. A playdate became a weekend. And what a weekend it was.
The group chat that started it all
Once the plan was set, the texts started flying. Here's something you should know: the Magpie Sisters met Lara in middle school. You can tell they're lifelong friends just by reading their texts. Leslle and Deidra are a true Italian-American family, full of love and full of sauce. Lara jumps right into the mix and keeps it real. Lance and I started looking forward to every new message as pure comic relief.
On my way to the airport for one of our topiary classes in Chicago, we called Leslle. We talked about absolutely nothing and hung up with our cheeks hurting from laughing. That's when we knew this trip was going to be epic, and one we could not miss.
Day 1: Lambertville (New Jersey… or Was It Pennsylvania?)
Lance and I flew into Philly and drove to Lambertville. Was it New Jersey or Pennsylvania? I honestly couldn't tell you. (For the record, Lambertville is in New Jersey, and New Hope, Pennsylvania, is right across the bridge.) All I know is that we crossed the Delaware River every single day, and this time of year it was gorgeous.
Lance dropped me at the Airbnb so I could get some work done, then headed off to meet Leslle. Yes, that's Leslle with three L's. She makes you feel like family the minute you meet her: engaging, full of stories, and absolutely no filter. Lance was on a mission to find more vintage Christmas ornaments, and Leslle knows where all the bodies are buried around there. She took him to every good spot, and they scored big.
Meanwhile, back at the house, I was working with Falcon Crest reruns in the background. Not by choice. I couldn't figure out how to change the channel.
And then, Lara
Two hours later, Lance and Leslle popped through the door, and right behind them came Lara Spencer.
Here's what I want you to know: the joy you see on TV is 100% real. She was warm, funny, welcoming, and completely ready for the hunt.
But wait. Where was Deidra? (Hang tight. You'll meet her soon.)
We raided the snacks Lance and Leslle had picked up, then headed into town for dinner. Parking is tough there, so when we found a spot, we grabbed it. It just happened to be about two miles from the restaurant.
I didn't care one bit. It was a beautiful night, and the town looked like it was carved straight out of Gilmore Girls. The old homes were dressed for Halloween in the most magical ways. We walked and talked and swapped stories like we'd known each other our whole lives.
And just like George Washington, I got to cross the Delaware at night. Okay, I walked across a bridge. But I'm pretty sure George would have done the same if one had been there.
Meet Deidra
After dinner, we finally met Deidra at a local bar for drinks. She'd had to work late. She was exactly as her sister described her: feisty, with an enormous, beautiful heart. (Remember that "feisty" part. It comes back.)
Day 2: Treasure Hunting at the Golden Nugget Antique Market
Lance and I are early risers, so we were up at 5:30. I knocked out my Saturday morning email blast while Lance went to make coffee.
One problem: the coffee maker didn't work.
We were due to meet Lara in the kitchen at 6:45. Without Lance's coffee and my morning Coke, there were going to be issues. So Lance tracked down a Dunkin' and came back with coffee for himself and Lara. I had my soda. Crisis averted, and the day was looking pretty.

Coffee Talk and Shopping (Lance and Lara)
Shopping alongside Lara Spencer
The hunt kicked off at the Golden Nugget Antique Market in Lambertville, one of the best flea markets in New Jersey and a favorite of antique hunters since 1967. Vendors were still setting up as Lance and Lara scoured the tables for the good stuff. Lara was also shooting for her YouTube channel, so Wilson, her cameraman, was on his way.

Early-morning finds at the Golden Nugget. (Lance and Lara)
It's a lot to interview two people at once while surrounded by that many pretty, shiny things. So while Lara and Lance filmed, I wandered off to explore. (Don't worry, Lara got me in a few shots too.)
At one point, Lara snuck up behind me, rested her head on my shoulder, and tickled my back. She asked what I was buying. It was a vintage Ralph Lauren vase. If you're a child of the '80s like Lara, Lance, and me, you understand the obsession with Ralph.
Enter the Magpie Sisters
About an hour later, the Magpie Sisters arrived, and the real exploring began. It was fascinating to see the market through their eyes: what caught their attention and how they sized things up. A couple of pieces we'd spotted earlier, and even discussed on camera, ended up going home with the sisters.

The whole crew, on the hunt. (Lance, Lara, Leslle, and Deidra)
And remember, the sisters grew up right alongside Lara, so they love Ralph Lauren as much as we do.
Ralph Lauren's Glen Plaid Glassware
Then the sisters spotted them: a set of vintage Ralph Lauren glen plaid glasses. I nearly fell over.
These crystal glasses date to the late 20th century. They were made in tall highballs and short rocks glasses, with the classic glen plaid pattern worked right into the glass. They're pure '80s and '90s Ralph Lauren: clubby, preppy, and made for a proper cocktail.
Back then, they sold for $40 for a set of four. I know because my sister gave me a set for my graduation. I wanted them so badly. I still have them, I still use them, and I LOVE THEM.
If you spot a set at a flea market, check the base for the Ralph Lauren mark and look for chips along the rim. Today they're true collector's pieces, and they mix beautifully with vintage barware and plaid for the holidays.
And if you ever come across the Ralph Lauren Glen Plaid water goblets or wine glasses, call me! As long as I don’t have to take out a mortgage for them, I just might buy them.”
The Lara Effect (and the Lance Effect)
As the crowd grew and I kept chasing shiny things, I noticed something happening all over the fair. I call it the Lara Effect.
People were buzzing. One person had just gotten a selfie with her. Another was telling a friend how Lara had shopped their booth at the Brimfield Antique Flea Market. Nobody had any idea we were friends, and I didn't want to tell them. It was too special just to watch the joy she brought them.
At one point, inside one of the antique buildings, a vendor was walking from booth to booth showing off his photo with Lara. It made his day, and probably his month. It made me wonder: who did he text that photo to first?
That's the Lara Effect. She brings joy wherever she goes, and that joy is everlasting.
Lance has it too, on a smaller scale. When we teach our traveling classes, people light up when they meet him. In their hearts, they've been friends with him for a long time. It's just like the Magpie Sisters, who followed us for years before we ever met. Today we're lifelong friends, and we're proud to call them ours.

Friends first, shoppers second. (David, Lance, Lara, and Leslle)
The Great Phone Rescue
After the Golden Nugget, we headed back to the Airbnb for a round of musical cars. This was a breakup that broke both Lara's heart and mine. Nothing beats all of us piled into the rented family minivan, laughing until it hurts.
The Magpie Sisters and I headed to their booth at A Touch of The Past Antiques, a multi-dealer antique gallery just across the Bucks County border in Lambertville, New Jersey. I helped them unload a pair of slipper chairs, because the sisters needed my help and I had the muscle to do it. (Don’t laugh. Scratch that, you can laugh. I sure did.) This is where it gets good.
My phone slipped out of my pocket.
Someone picked it up and texted our group chat: "I have someone's phone." It must have just happened, because the lock screen hadn't kicked in yet. My phone was officially in a stranger's hands.
Warrior Deidra
Enter Deidra, fierce protector and resident warrior of our friend group. She called my phone right away, and a woman answered. Yes, she had it. Yes, she was in Lambertville.
"So are we," Deidra said. "Where in Lambertville? My friend will come get it."
"I told you. I'm in Lambertville."
"So are we. Where in Lambertville?"
"I'm not from here. Just go look for it on the street." Click.
Warrior Deidra went into full protective mode. Worried that her new friend was about to lose his phone for good, she sprang into action and tracked it down a block and a half away, nowhere near where we were. I was so grateful.
Crisis solved. Love you, Deidra.
Meissen, Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls, and a Wicker Dog in a Bonnet
Off to the next stop. We caught up with Lara and Lance, only to find them arguing over who spotted the vintage Meissen porcelain dishes first. As friends do, they split the find: Lara took the dinner plates, and Lance took the dessert plates.
We ended the day at the Magpie Sisters' home. Deidra and Leslle ran next door to the local tavern and came back with Philly cheesesteak egg rolls. Yes, really, and they were delicious. Even I, someone who eats like a five-year-old, wanted more. Then we got ready for a little Instagram Live sale of the day's finds.

Porch time with the gang.
Then the rain rolled in. Lara decided to get an early start home with her treasures. As anyone who follows her knows, she loves all animals. Earlier that day she'd found a wicker dog wearing a Laura Ingalls Wilder–style bonnet, and she simply had to have it. So with her new security dog buckled into the front seat, she was off to see her husband, Rick.

Meet the security dog. Bonnet included. (Lance and Lara)
The rest of us walked across the street for dinner.
Day 3: The Hardest Part
Exhausted from a full day of nonstop shopping, we got up one more time to meet the Magpie Sisters and say goodbye. Now I understood why Lara left early. Between the gloomy rain and saying goodbye to dear friends, it simply stinks.

One last selfie before saying goodbye. (Leslle, Deidra, David, and Lara)
I drove Lance to the airport so he could fly home and get back to work. Then I pointed the car toward Connecticut to meet up with the Dolce family.
But that's a story for another post. Stay tuned.
Tips for Shopping the Golden Nugget Antique Market
Planning your own flea market trip to Lambertville? Here's what we learned:
- Check the days. The market is open Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with indoor shops and outdoor tables.
- Go early. We arrived while vendors were still setting up, and that's when the best pieces go.
- Ask what else they have. Many vendors keep extra stock that isn't on the table.
- Bring a big tote. You'll need it for the vintage porcelain, art, and ornaments you didn't plan to buy.
- Make a weekend of it. Lambertville and New Hope sit on either side of the Delaware River, so there are antique shops, restaurants, and river views just a short walk away.
